Grammar school
of Martin Hattala Trstená
Slovakia

Our school

The first grammar school in Orava was established in Trstená. The foundation stone of the new school was laid on 15 July 1868 and the construction of the building was completed in 1869. Teaching began in the newly built grammar school in the school year 1869/70. The grammar school was named "Trstenské Royal Catholic Four-Class Grammar School".

Martin Hattala Grammar School is also known as a secondary school in the town Trstená in the north of Slovakia. It is unique in its history, but there are also many different subjects that young people have the opportunity to study here. The school is attended by students who lives not only locally but also those who live in another regions. All of them highly praise and enjoy their studies. Especially thanks to the friendly atmosphere of the school.
The grammar school is named after a very important person Martin Hattala who was an important teacher and thanks to whom the Slovak language is so exceptional. Just for fun, for Slovaks, Martin Hattala is sort of William Shakespeare for the English. Although Martin Hattala was not a poet, we greatly appreciate his contributions to the grammar of the Slovak language. And what’s more Martin Hattala was born in Trstená.

Let's move on to what makes our school exceptional.

Apart from celebrating an incredible anniversary 150 years last year, it is the only school with a bilingual Spanish section in the vicinity of 100 km. Students have the opportunity to study natural sciences in Spanish and are taught by certified Spanish teachers. However, this is not the only Spanish language for which students travel long distances. The grammar school also offers the study of informatics and natural sciences. More than 50 teachers  try to educate all students and help them to become successful young people. The school also offers a number of projects, trips and excursions, thanks to which students have the opportunity to travel abroad and get to know the cultural, historical and natural beauties of Europe, but also their home country - Slovakia.

But there was a lot of formal information, in the following lines you can read what students think about our School:
